Orin plays your MP3, FLAC and M4A files inside the classic .wsz skins of the 2000s desktop era, pixel for pixel. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. The name is the Yoruba word for song.

The skins

A classic skin has no layout engine. It is a set of bitmaps, and every button and slider sits at a fixed position in a 275 by 116 pixel window. Orin reads the whole format: the main, equalizer and playlist windows, the skin's own fonts and visualizer colors, and the odd corners of real-world skins, such as run-length-encoded bitmaps, file names in any case and sheets that are missing and fall back to the defaults.

Orin's own neon skin is free. You can import any other classic skin from Files or a download link, and imported skins stay on a shelf so you can switch between them.

A real player

The controls aren't decoration. Balance is a real stereo pan, the 10-band equalizer changes the sound with presets included, and the visualizer is drawn from a live FFT of the audio, as a spectrum or an oscilloscope. Playback carries on in the background, with lock-screen controls, media keys and a home-screen widget.

How it's built

Orin is a Flutter app. Audio goes through SoLoud, because the balance slider needs stereo pan and the visualizer needs FFT data, and the higher-level Flutter players don't expose either.

There's no account and no subscription, and it works offline. The download is free, imported skins are free for 14 days, and then it's a one-time $6.99 in the US.
